Cyprus is a fantastic location to visit all year round, because it simply never gets cold and miserable! With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, you’re guaranteed a lovely trip with great weather, regardless of when you visit. One of the best times of all to visit Cyprus is actually the autumn. The temperatures are still nice and hot, in the 30s, and the sea is warm too, so you can enjoy the beach just as much as in summer, but without the crowds of the major summer tourist season. As an added bonus, you’ll also get to appreciate the stunning autumn colours that make this beautiful island even more magical. When the leaves are orange, red and gold, you simply must spend time out and about exploring. Here are some spots that are truly spectacular in the autumn months…
1. Tzielefos bridge
If you’re looking for that perfect photo for Instagram, then this is going to be the place to visit. Tzielefos bridge is one of three Venetian Bridges set on a lovely nature trail within the Pafos Forest. With dense foliage, the autumnal colours are a real treat for the senses. You can begin the trail from pretty Kaminaria village in the Troodos Mountains. It’s about an hour’s drive from the coast but it is definitely worth the journey! Follow the trail and you’ll be able to see Elias Bridge, Roudias Bridge, and most stunning of all, the medieval Tzielefos Bridge.
This quaint village is set on the slope of the Troodos Mountains, so be prepared for an incline when you’re exploring here! From the upper part of the village you’re rewarded with stunning scenic views of the Cypriot countryside which really wow in the autumn. No visit to Platres is complete without a view of the magnificent Kalidona Waterfall nearby, one of the tallest falls in Cyprus.
A visit to Kakopetria is like stepping back in time. This unspoilt village is at one with nature, set happily amidst the streams and forests of the Troodos Mountains. If you’re interested in traditional Cypriot architecture, you’ll find plenty of examples in Kakopetria. A peaceful yet welcoming village, it’s a lovely escape from the busier tourist areas and so picturesque during the autumn.
If you’re outdoorsy, then you should definitely head to Platania while you’re in the Kakopetria area. Here you’ll find miles of fantastic hiking trails, the perfect opportunity to get out and about in the heart of the forest. The permanent picnic site is a popular feature with both locals and tourists, and there’s a campsite here too.
5. The wine routes
As home to the oldest wine in the world, Commandaria, the favourite wine of Richard the Lionheart, it’s perhaps no surprise that Cyprus has many vineyards that you can visit. Taking in a tour of the wine routes will reward you with fantastic scenery, delicious wine sampling, and some surprises along the way as you explore rural Cyprus.
